As a New York State Assemblyman and later as governor of New York, Roosevelt was known for his support of workingmen. During his first term as president, he expanded the powers of the office to control big business and protect smaller, independent companies. This 1904 election banner features the slogan "Protection to American Industries" as part of the Republican platform at the time.
