With most of its 65,000 acres primitive woodland, Allegany State Park is the largest state park in the system. Red House and Quaker, two developed areas, have sand beaches and hiking and nature trails that are also used for horseback riding, biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Red House has recently added ice fishing to its list of winter activities. Allegany is the most attractive of the parks in the state system for snomobiling - it boasts 90 miles of trails.
The park includes three campgrounds and 27 cabin trails with over 300 campsites and 300 cabins, more than 150 of them winterized, and three group camps available for rental. The park's new additions include year-round turnkey cottages, which are fully equipped with the latest conveniences and located at both the Red House and Quaker areas.
The Old Quaker Store has been completely restored and now houses a park museum. A three-dimensional topographic map of the park to orient visitors to its main features is one of the highlighted exhibits. Devoted outdoorspeople are attracted year round to the park's mixed oak and hardwood forest, mountains, rolling hills and meadows, streams, ponds, and lakes.
Allegany State Park is open all year. From Rt. 17 (Southern Tier Expressway), use Exits 19 and 20 to access the park's Red House area and Exit 18 for its Quaker area.
