At a junction along one of the most historic water routes in America, connecting the Hudson River to Lake Champlain, the Lake George Battlefield Park site witnessed military engagements during both the French and Indian War (1755-1763) and the American Revolution (1775-1783). The site includes the Fort George Ruins.
Under orders from Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Amherst, Col. James Montresor of the British Royal Engineers began construction of Fort George in 1759, during the French and Indian War. Designed for a garrison of 600 men, the star-shaped fort was to be built of limestone with a bastion at each of its four corners. Because of rapid successes by the British army to the north, however, the strategic value of Fort George diminished and only the southwest bastion was ever completed. Theodore Roosevelt explored the ruins of this fort on Aug. 4, 1898.
