The New York State Museum in Albany is the place where people go to discover why New York is called the Empire State. Created in 1836 to encourage inquiries, discovery and education, it is dedicated to preserving New York's rich artistic, social, historical and environmental legacies under the leadership of the New York State Education Department. The museum is located in the Cultural Education Center (CEC) at the south end of the Empire State Plaza, across Madison Avenue (Rt. 20). The New York State Library, the New York State Archives and the Records Administration are also housed in CEC.

The research conducted by the museum's scientists and historians undergirds all of its activities, including specialized services to government and industry. The permanent exhibition halls, temporary exhibits and public programs are created around materials collected by the museum's own researchers and curators, as well as collections from other institutions. They also offer a menu of traveling exhibits for rental from other institutions.
